The shades have been in the garage all winter waiting for springtime to bring warmer weather and cheerful flowers.
I covered the bottom opening by inserting a coffee filter. The ones I used are little circles from my coffee press and they fit just right. You could cut a circle from regular filters - I would double up just to be sure the soil remains securely inside. If you are careful to not over-water, a plastic sandwich bag would work too and you wouldn't need a saucer for drips. 
Trailing ivy, Pothos or African Violet could be used if you want a houseplant rather that an annual.
The saucers were made using discarded lids from jars. I roughed up the surface and painted with acrylic paint giving the lids several coats for complete coverage. When dried, I applied a coat of gloss clear acrylic sealer.
